Kate and John on their marks for Special Olympics

Friday - MORE than 50 athletes from Lincolnshire, Sheffield, Leicestershire, Norfolk and Northamptonshire are heading to Boston this weekend for a major sporting event.

The Special Olympics East Midlands Athletics competition takes place at the Princess Royal Sports Arena tomorrow (Saturday) with 19 of the athletes taking part from Special Olympics Lincolnshire.

Included in the county team are two Boston athletes, Kate Headland and John Gleadell, who both competed in the Special Olympics National Competition in Leicester 2009.

Kate will be competing in softball and 50m run while John will be racing in the 200m and 400m.

Angela Morley, chairman of Special Olympics Lincolnshire, said: "We are very pleased to be holding the event at the PRSA once again as the track and facilities are ideal for athletes with learning disabilities.

"And, as always, we are looking forward to seeing athletes, coaches and volunteers from other regions."

The Mayor of Boston, Coun Peter Jordan, will be attending the event to present the medals to competitors.

The action runs from 10am-4pm.
