Boston vets make good start in title defence

THERE were two Boston tennis teams in action this weekend in the Boston and District Winter League.

Boston A and Boston F had an inter club fixture and Ryan Frankish, Zak McDonnell-Woods, Richard Woods and Alex Gordon enjoyed a 5-3 for Boston A.

At the end of the first round Boston A had the advantage having won 3 sets to 1 and they maintained this lead throughout the second round.

Playing for Boston F were Daniel Maund, Sarah Moysey, Terry Wilkinson and Helen Duckett.

Boston Tennis Club men’s veteran first team began matches in this season’s Lincolnshire Veterans League on Sunday afternoon with a home match against Bourne.

Boston are the current league champions and they withstood the pressure of defending the title to clinch the win in a close match.

The score for the team of Ray Frankish, James Newton, Mike Sweeney and Michael Audus was even at the end of the first round at two sets apiece. At the end of the second round, however, Mike Sweeney and Michael Audus won a vital set against Bourne’s first pair to give Boston a 5-3 win.

The Ladies second team was away to Gainsborough in the Veterans Lincolnshire Doubles League. The team of Tricia Sweeney, Joan Beale, Hilary Calvert and Diane Sharpe gained a 4-4 draw.

Boston Juniors, playing in a series of National Winter Series events over the last fortnight include Joe Woolley, Henry Beesley, Madeline Verdegaal and Emily Hawkesworth.

Madeline and Emily played in under 16 qualifying events in Manchester and in Corby respectively.

Both girls reached the last 16 in these tournaments and Madeline was runner up in the final of the consolation event.

Joe Woolley and Henry Beesley competed in the main draw of the 14 and under Winter National Series, a grade two tournament, at Kings Park Tennis Centre in Northampton.

Both boys went out to Hertfordshire’s Charles Broom.

Henry met this competitor in the last 16 whilst Joe was a losing semi-finalist.

Earlier Joe had taken part in an under 16 regional tournament, also at Kings Park.

On this occasion he reached the quarter finals losing out to Lloyd Read from Northampton.
