Two Boston ABC fighters have won Amateur Boxing Association East Midlands junior titles over the weekend.

Thomas Pogson and William O’Connor both returned from Scunthorpe’s Redbourne Sports & Social Club with winners’ medals... although they both triumphed in very different ways.

This was the first round of the newly-formed area divisional championships.

O’Connor turned up for the draw to discover he was the only boxer in the 52k category and was given a bye into the Midlands round, being crowned East Midlands champion without having to throw any leather.

However, ‘Tommy Gun’ Pogson - the cousin of Boston’s Commonwealth Games gold medallist Callum Johnson - claimed his title after victory against Stamford ABC’s Elonzo Smith in the 75k section.

The Stamford lad egan the bout by throwing massive telling shots, which put Pogson on the defensive.

However, using his ring craft, called on his quick feet and effective combination work to make it a one-sided affair (11-8, 10-3, 10-2, 11-3, 11-2).

A date for the next round has still to be announced, but O’Connor and Pogson - who has been put through his paces by coach Barry Kilmore - will be up against some of the best boxers in the Midlands.

The Boston ABC champions will join fellow clubmates in action at the home show at Haven High Technology College on May 4.

Tickets can’t be bought on the door, but are available from Boston ABC by calling Kevin Smith on 07947 689 908.
