Boston GC maintained their amazing record in the event on Sunday.

Competing at Waltham Windmill GC in Grimsby on Sunday, two-time winner Dawson teamed up with Woodcock.

In the Butlin Challenge Trophy, played off scratch, Sam shot a one-under-par 70 and was unlucky to lose out on a countback for first prize as his birdie putt lipped out on the final hole.

In the Hotchkin Challenge Trophy, played off handicap, Ross shot a gross 78 (nett 68) to win by one shot.

Having never played the course before, it was an excellent round, but things nearly came to grief on the 17th as an adrenalin-fuelled six iron carried the green, costing him as double bogey.

Their combined scores in the team event saw Boston Golf Club take the coveted LGUC Taylor Challenge Trophy for the fourth time in six years.

Sunday’s Mens Am-Am was a pre-cursor to a week of open events to be held during the forthcoming Gala Week.

A good turn-out saw teams getting in some valuable practice for Thursday’s Mens Open Am-Am and Saturday’s Gala Day Am-Am.

The scoring was very close and it came down to a countback on the back six holes between two teams of old campaigners with Mick Pond’s men just edging out Denis Limb’s fourball.

Leaderboard: 1 M. Pond, A. Annous, C. Ballard, J. Black 85pts c/b, 2 D. Limb, G. Day, C. Stanney, R. Maxwell 85pts, 3 T. Newton, D. Cartwright, M. Johns, D. Richardson 85pts c/b, 4 J. Barrett, T. Reay, P. McMunn, S. Thompson 85pts, 5 I. Humphries, K. Kilbourn, S. Hook, M. Hoyland 83pts.

Boston scored another success on the road as Eddie and Jean Markham teamed up with Pam and Malcolm Hyde to win the Open Mixed Am-Am at Holme Hall, Scunthorpe, by one point with a score of 82 points.

In the ladies’ section, Ruth Simpson continued excellent vein of form as she took The Skene Shield on Sunday with a very good score of +2, herself and Marion Bavin being the only players to get in red figures.

Leaderboard: 1 Ruth Simpson (9) +2, 2 Marian Bavin (27) +1, 3 Jean E. Markham (16) 0, 4 Rita Taylor (23) 0, 5 Rebecca Brown (30) -1, 6 Judith Flevill (16) -1, 7 Marian Smith (28) -3, 8 Chris Sherriff (21) -3, 9 Pam King (25) -4, 10 Jane Marriott (20) -5.

The seniors’ Open Day proved a great success, with the application for entry being closed early because of the numbers of teams wishing to take part.

This year 176 players enjoyed a great day of golf. The winning team of H. Willows, A. Maddison, K. Bellamy and J. Bronell came from the Lincoln GC.
