DONINGTON racer Christian Slater has picked up his first trophy of the season, finishing second in the ACU National Clubman’s Championship.

Racing at Croft, near Darlington, Slater’s finish moved him up to fourth in the championship, hosted by Derby Phoenix Motor Cycle Club.

As there was no test day available, each rider had just 15 minutes to dial into the circuit and set up the machines for racing.

Slater qualified in 10th place on the grid.

With loads of spray from the 20-plus machines going into the first bend, it was a wonder how they all managed to see the apex, but Slater came out in sixth, swiftly moving up to fourth.

By the end of the third lap he was in second place and starting to close in on the race and championship leader Kingsley Ruddy.

Slater couldn’t catch his rival, but he did maintain second spot as he crossed the finish line.

Slater – nicknamed Bomber – also competed in the Cock O The North event at Scarborough, marking his road racing debut.

The Team had borrowed a Suzuki 600 from a friend for the weekend to enable Christian to obtain extra practice on both days.

With Christian’s own Suzuki GSXR1000 being available for the 1,000cc class races, he had his work cut out.

His first practice session produced a 2 mins 9 secs lap on the borrowed 600. His first attempt on the 1,000cc machine produced a time of 2min 4 seconds.

In his first official road race around the Oliver’s Mount circuit, Slater finished eighth out of 18 starters.

Out of 32 entries for the main race of the weekend, only 22 riders would qualify, with Slater coming in 21st fastest, qualifying on the back row of the grid.

Overall, he finished in 16th.
