The team of R. Reeson, S. Tebbs, P. Sharp and I. Tebbs won the Marston’s Brewery Christmas Tournament at Boston Indoor Bowls Club.

Twenty teams of four battled it out for the prize money.

The scoring format rewards consistency, as teams score a point for each end won as well as four points for a win and two each for a draw, so a total of 14 points are available for a perfect score in each of the 10-end games.

The runners-up, two points behind the victors - who scored 42 points - were E. May, L. Skinner, M. Kemp and J. Swain.

Quite a way back in third place with 35 points were J. Sharp, C. Clarke, K. Thorlby and K. Sharp and, thanks to a big last session result, I. Reeson, B. Reeson, S. Lawrence and A. Bennett nicked fourth place with 34 points.

On the same day Spalding IBC held their Open Singles, and it turned out to be a good day for some of the Boston bowlers who took part.

Three made the quarter-finals. Martin Tomlin lost out a really tight game against Spalding’s Graham Smith 4-5, 5-6, Jonathan West beat Norfolk’s Wayne Wilgress 6-4, 8-0 and Ron Flowers had a good 7-3, 9-1 win over Lincoln’s Danny Brown.

In the semi-finals Jonathan’s good run came to an end against Graham 1-10, 4-8, but Ron made it through to the final after a tight 5-4, 5-6, 2-1 win over Spalding’s Ash Caress, giving Graham a third opponent from Boston in succession.

Ron won the first set 7-5 but Graham hit back to take the second set 7-2 before Ron wrapped up the match 2-0 in the tie break to become the 2013 Spalding Open Champion.
