HARRIET Housam claimed a bronze medal at the British Rowing Championships.
Competing at Nottingham over the weekend, she claimed third in the British Women’s junior double sculls event.
Harriet, from Boston Rowing Club, took the stroke seat as she partnered Bethan Lloyd (bow), from Derby Rowing Club.
The weather conditions on the 2k National Watersports Centre Holme Pierpont Course were challenging, with strong winds and driving rain.
Harriet and Bethan laid down the gauntlet early on as they beat the favourites from Eton Excelsior and Marlow rowing clubs in the first heats, with a time of 8 mins 20 secs.
However, the final was to go differently.
Teams from Eton and the Sir William Borlase School headed the race from the start, with Harriet and Bethan having to take up the rating to keep pace with all five of the other crews.
By the 1k mark they were challenging for fourth place, picking up speed.
With 500m left, third place was looking a strong reality, and with the Boston/Derby pairing exerting firm pressure, they closed in on the leaders for a well-earned bronze medal.
Eton took gold, with Borlase in second.
Signs are encouraging for Harriet, as she still has another two years remaining in this age category, setting her sights on placing higher in the future
Harriet is now aiming to achie a good result in the Team GB trials, which will be held on Boston’s River Witham in November.
