Martin wins seniors’ title at Boston West GC

Les Martin was crowned the senior section’s champion at Boston West Golf Club.

The Senior Championship was held over 36 holes, and Les recorded a nett score of 140.

In second was Norman Stanley (147) and third was Norman Smith (148).

Jim Weight was fourth, also on 148.

John Chain was the best golfer with a gross score of 166, and second was Ricky Elms on 171, with Gary King third with 172 shots.

The June Medal was won by Errol Appleby, who recorded nett 68.

In second was John Chain, also with nett 68 and Jim Weight was third with a nett 73.

Errol Appleby also won nearest the pin on the eighth and Barrie Wilkinson won on the 17th.

Thirty-four members from Boston West Golf Club’s senior section took part in the Hillcote Trophy.

The event - held at Waltham Windmill - was an exchange day, with John Chain the winner as he returned with 39 points. Second was Gerald Green on 37 with Geoff Upsall (37) third and John Wade (36) fourth.

Stewart Pikett (33) was fifth and Trevor Morris (33) finished sixth.

Nearest the pin on the fifth hole was Arnold Bennett, with John Clark closest on the ninth. Ken Ashforth came closest on the 14th and Norman Smith on the 17th.

The home match against Belton Woods saw Boston West’s team win 4.5-3.5.

The winning pairs were Stewart Pikett & John Baker 5-3, Phil Thomas & Ken Ashforth 3-2, Rod Roberts & John Clark 4-3 and Royce Twigg & Gerald Green 4-2, while Andy Frankowski & Terry Coulter halved their match.

Against Blankney, Boston West went down 5.5-2.5 at home.

The winning pairs were Trevor Morris & Norman Stanley 1-0, John Chain & Glyn Morgan 2-0, Les Martin & Norman Smith 2-1, Ken Ashforth & Royce Twigg 7-6 and Barrie Wilkinson & Ken Steele 3-2. John Baker & Mike McPhail halved their game.
