Netball youngsters take tournament gongs

Three of Boston’s junior netball teams travelled north on Sunday to compete in the annual Brigg and District Netball Club tournament.

The youngest team to play at the Vale of Ancholme School, Grammar School Road, in Brigg,was the Boston Whirlwinds, the under nines.

They played six matches in total against teams from Brigg, Hull and North Yorkshire during their time at the 12th annual tournament.

Team manager Kim Fletcher said she was very proud of the youngsters.

She said the enthusiasm and determination the seven girls displayed was fantastic, and resulted in the team gaining bronze medals for their hard work.

○ The under 11s, Boston Cyclone, had two new club members join the team, Zoe and Chloe.

The girls bonded together magnificently as a team, again playing some very tough opposition from Lincolnshire and Yorkshire.

The girls were unlucky to lose out by a one goal deficit in a couple of matches, but with wins over Washingborough Imps and Allus they were also awarded Bronze Medals.

Debbie Winrow, their team manager said she was delighted with the team’s overall performance.

○ A squad of nine under 12 girls formed the team for Boston Blizzard.

The team got off to a sterling start with a 6-0 victory over Grimsby.

Their second match was against the Chevron’s from Yorkshire, who proved to be a superb team, and were the eventual tournament winners.

The girls did not give up and fought hard until the final whistle, final score 5-12.

After giving 100 per cent effort to the Chevron’s match the next one straight after saw a 3-3 draw against Brigg that the team were unlucky not to have won.

With a small break, and replenished energy levels, the team were back on form for the next two games beating Allus 8-4 and Horncastle 6-0.

The last game was against rivals Lincoln City, which the girls knew from past experience would be tough encounter - it did not disappoint.

The winner of the match would secure tournament Runner’s Up and silver medals.

With every player giving their last final ounce of effort the final whistle blew and cheers erupted from the Boston team and supporters, a very well earnt 5-4 victory.

○ Boston Juniors are looking to enter team’s into the forthcoming Lincolnshire County Netball League from under 11’s to under 19’s.
