Boston pool player Stuart Whitaker has earned a place in the England under 21s squad.

He was one of a number of Lincolnshire hopefuls who took part in the English Pool Association trials and the Inter-County finals at the Yarmouth Vauxhall Holiday Park last weekend.

Whitaker, who also plays in the Boston Snooker League, held his nerve to book his place in the team.

“I was shocked to qualify, but I played the best pool of my life,” Whitaker told The Standard.

“But getting measured up for your waistcoat is a great feeling.”

Whitaker will make his England debut at the end of March as his team take on the men’s national champions.

Ironically, that team is Boston’s Sportsman side, Whitaker’s club.

“I’ll have to play well that day, there’s nothing worse than playing your mates,” he added.

This will be followed by England play-offs at the end of April where the 16 members of the squad will battle it out against one another for the chance to take part in the World Championships.

He added: “Pool’s been a hobby, but the hard work really starts for me now.”

Several other pool players from the area were involved in the trials.

However, Wyberton’s Andrea Bennett and Tracy Carter, Wigtoft’s Ben Wrigglesworth and Gary Willis, from Boston, all just fell short.

In the Inter-County finals, Lincolnshire’s seniors were crowned champions, beating Nottingham in the final.
