Swimmers slip to fourth in Fenland League final

Boston Swimming Club travelled to Peterborough for the Fenland League final, finishing in fourth place.

The team started the evening second in the league, two points behind leaders Cambridge and just in front of both Peterborough A and B teams.

Knowing only a win would give the team any chance of clinching the league title, the early results did not go in their favour.

It took until event seven before the team achieved their first race win when Lewis McGarry comfortably won the boys’ 10/u 50m breaststroke.

This was quickly followed by Chloe Baldry winning the girls’ 11/u butterfly, leaving the team in third place after 10 races.

However, the next 10 races followed a similar pattern as a host of low place finishes were punctuated by a second race win for McGarry in the boys’ 11/u 50m freestyle, while Charlize Arundell produced a fast time in an outstanding win in the girls’ 13/u 50m breaststroke to keep the team in third place.

Although the team continued to fight hard and recorded 19 personal best times on the evening, they could only manage one further race win as Charlize Arundell continued her good form by winning the girls 13/u 50m butterfly race.

A run of low placed finishes in the last 10 races enabled Peterborough A to overtake take Boston on the final race and thus pushed the team into fourth place on the evening and fourth place in the final league standings.
