LocaL athletes Sarah Stanhope and Dominic Sykes have been selected to represent Lincolnshire at the Aviva English Schools Championships this weekend.
Sarah, 17, and Dominic, 16, both from Boston, will both compete in the hammer at Gateshead on July 1 and 2, as part of the Intermediate Boys and Senior Girls squad from the county.
Sarah, who attends the Giles Academy, was delighted to have been selected and said: “I first became interested in athletics through school and my headteacher Mr Bull has been very encouraging. I am excited to represent the Senior Girls at the English Schools and it will be the fourth time I have competed in the championships. I finished fifth last year in the Intermediate category, so I’m hoping for a good result this year also.”
Sarah won gold at the Lincolnshire Schools Competition at the beginning of this month where she threw a Personal Best score and gained a new championship record of 46.82m. She has also won the Lincolnshire County Championships and Eastern County Championships in the 4kg hammer.
Dominic, who is studying for his GCSEs at Boston Grammar School, also claimed first place at the Lincolnshire Schools competition. He said: “I won my category at the Lincolnshire School Games which enabled me to qualify for the Anglian Schools competitions, where I received a silver medal. I’ve won eight of my 10 competitions this season and have thrown the national standard six times. I’m training hard alongside my studies and am pleased to have been selected for the English School Championships.”
Both athletes are members of the Lincolnshire Elite Athlete Programme (LEAP) run by Lincolnshire Sports Partnership. LEAP provides funding and support for talented athletes hoping to compete at the Olympic or Paralympic Games.
Hayley Cook, representative from Lincolnshire Sports Partnership, said: “This is excellent news for both Sarah and Dominic.
“They have both been working very hard this season and their throws are improving week on week. We are proud to have them on LEAP and wish them both every success at the competition this weekend.”
