Two aces for pigeon fanciers

Pigeon fanciers had two aces to test their skills over the weekend - a 180-mile yearling race from Alnwick on Saturday, and the open 500-mile North Road Championship Club classic from Lerwick, in the Shetland Islands, on Sunday.

The Lerwick race was won by Mick Freeman, of Norwich, and leading Boston-area velocities in the provisional result were Ken Ward (1356 yards per minute), Mr and Mrs B. Garnham (1321), Terry Bennett (1298), D.J. Brackenbury (1295), Upsall and Frost (1253), Joe McFadyen (1251), Kirkman and Weir (1248), G. Wheatman (1091), L.R. Manning (1087), Hardy and Burt (1079), George Watts (966).
