A Boston fancier has won one of the top pigeon races in the country - to repeat a feat accomplished by his father 37 years ago.

Carl Upsall, of Eastwood Road, timed the first bird in the North Road Championship Club’s 400-mile race from Thurso on Saturday.

His father, Bill, won the same organisation’s race from the same racepoint back in 1977.

Carl, competing as the Upsall and Frost partnership, completed what he described as an ‘incredible’ weekend by taking the first six places in Boston Central RPC’s race held in conjunction with the classic event.

It is not his first taste of national success as, in the partnership of Upsall and Trigg, he won the North Road Championship Club’s race from Perth in 1991.

As he celebrated an outstanding result, other fanciers up and down the country were left downhearted as the race proved tougher than expected on a day when the birds were liberated in glorious sunshine in Scotland at 5.40am.

Chairman of the NRCC, Brian Garnham, described the winning performance as ‘fantastic’.

Club results from Thurso were: Boston Central RPC: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 Upsall and Frost 1053 yards per minute, 931, 915, 846, 804 and 734, 7 G Watts 660, 8 Kirkman and Weir 605, 9 G and C Edwards 602, 10 Upsall and Frost 512, 11 Appleby and Dtr 487, 12 G and C Edwards 445, 13 and 14 G Watts 429 and 426.

Boston and District FC: 1 and 2 Mr and Mrs B Garnham 718 and 682, 3 D Brackenbury 605, 4 Mr and Mrs Garnham 593, 5 D Brackenbury 541, 6 and 7 LR Manning 525 and 451.

Local fanciers were also competing from a shorter race from Bubwith when results were:
