Motorcycle ace on the mend after horror crash

Wednesday, 9.50am - RACING ace Steve Plater is on a remarkable road to recovery after breaking two vertebrae and suffering a double fracture of the arm less than three months ago.

The fearless Woodhall Spa rider has got back in the saddle for the first time since the high-speed crash in practice for the NW200 in Ireland in May.

Steve rode a Honda Hornet around the track at Brands Hatch to see how his injuries stood up and was pleased with the results.

He said: "I haven't ridden a bike since May 13 when I crashed at the North West 200, but it felt so good being back out on track on Wednesday.

"I didn't really know what to expect as I still have a slight numbness in my fingers, but once I was out there I had no issues at all. I was just so excited about getting the leathers back on and doing some laps in a relaxed fashion."

He was joined on his practice run by Australian Brian Staring who deputised for him at Snetterton and will again take charge of the HM Plant Honda Fireblade at Brands Hatch in round nine of the National Superstock Championship at the weekend.

Steve hopes to return to racing at Cadwell Park at the end of the month.

He said: "We haven't been on the race bike as yet but I completed loads of laps on the Honda Hornet last week and I am still targeting a return at Cadwell Park. I am still having physio twice a week and I am getting better every day, so once I have seen the specialist in Nottingham before Cadwell Park and seen the BSB medical staff I should be all systems go.

"It has been great to help Bryan out and show him around Brands Hatch before next weekend. I just can't wait to get back out there now having watched from the sidelines for so long."

Cadwell Park hosts its second British Superbike championship round of the 2010 season over the Bank Holiday weekend of August 28-30 when a bumper crowd is expected to watch their local hero make his return to race action.
