Are Penmaen E out of table tennis title race?

IT’S been a bad week for one Penmaen side in the table tennis league...

Penmaen E 3 Penmaen C 7: WITH Penmaen E losing to Penmaen C this week, have they blown any chance of promotion from the AD Dickinson Division Two?

With games running out, they are now 13 points adrift of the C team, with only one match in hand.

Richard Malik showed why he is top of the averages in the division, winning his three to stay unbeaten this season.

However, he was made to work hard for every point, needing five sets to see off the challenge of Chris Cooke, and winning two sets at deuce against Dave Smith.

John Shortland took the first end against Richard, but could not go on and press home the advantage.

Jack Bittner and James Wood tried to add to the E team’s score, James taking John to five ends, but it was not to be.

l Penmaen C 6 Wrangle B 4: CHRIS Cooke was on top form when Penmaen C played Wrangle B, winning his three games in straight sets to put his team on track for another win in their quest for a promotion spot.

Number eight-ranked Dave Smith added two more hard-fought victories, although Tim Sampson took him to five sets, and Viv Rynne to four, but Dave was finally beaten by David Butler.

John Shortland had four deuce sets in his singles – three in one game, against David – but was unable to force a victory.

However, Dave and Chris beat Tim and David in the doubles to clinch a narrow 6-4 victory on the night.

l Sibsey B 3 Lodgers H 7: FIFTH-ranked Steve Hill proved his worth when Sibsey B hosted third-placed Lodgers H, winning his three games to give Sibsey three vital points.

Richard Hill stretched each of the Lodgers’ players, but lost four decisive games at deuce to break his resistance.

With no third player, Sibsey needed the doubles to stay clear of the teams below them, but Steve Marshall and Boyd Smith edged a tense five-setter to record a 7-3 win.

l Wrangle B 3 Sibsey B 7: STEVE Hill continued his current run of good form, beating both Tony Hall and Tim Sampson of two-man Wrangle B to set his Sibsey B team on their way to a 7-3 victory.

Richard Hill chipped in with one, against Tim, while Wayne Grooby found the going altogether tougher against the experienced Wrangle pair.

Richard and Steve combined in the doubles to see off the challenge of Tim and Tony, thus rounding off a highly satisfactory evening for the successful Sibsey team.
