Pool boys on cue for title

Friday, 8.30am - THE Sportsman pool team are going potty – after being crowned national champs.

The Rosebery Avenue pool hall won the national Golden Cue three-man team championships at Great Yarmouth.

Team members Gary Willis, Carl Rowe, Steve Mooney and Neal Jackson beat 319 other teams who qualified for the finals following the regional stages.

In the final they came up against Bristol team Three Crowns, but after a tense start Willis and Mooney both won their final two games for a 4-2 lead before Rowe broke and cleared the table to give the title to Boston's Sportsman team.

In the early rounds the Sportsman beat Live and Let Live, from Colchester, 5-3, Worcester-based Riley's 5-1 and Croydon team Suzy Qs 5-3.

This was followed by 5-4 wins against Newport (Isle of Wight) and Riley's (Peterborough), after being 4-2 down on both occasions.

A 5-2 quarter-final win against Worksop team Breakers saw them drawn against defending champions PJ's (Stourbridge) in the semis.

Rowe won all three of his frames to ensure they made it into the final.
