In their first Merit League match of the season, Boston Rugby Club’s Development team served up a 10-try feast.

Centre Jaron Cowern led the way with five tries, and Rusty Wright chipped in with two.

The team welcomed back centre Brendan Rooney after a six-year absence, and his experience and presence proved central in marshalling the youthful back division.

The back line saw debuts for wingers Mark Potter and Adam Minard.

From the start, Boston were quick to impose their pattern of play - good forward drives, and a solid scrum.

An early injury to number eight John Peng, saw a reshuffle, with winger Mark Potter coming off the bench and centre Sam Paling moving to back row.

It did not take long before the pressure brought its reward.

A scrum against the head saw Matt Keightley break down the blind side. Quick hands and a deft pass by Rooney put winger Damien Howlett into space to score the side’s first try.

Straight from the resulting kick off, Cowern demonstrated his strong running skills when, from his own 22, he broke through the Hykeham back line and sprinted the length of the pitch to score under the posts.

The conversion by Matt Keightley took the score to 12-0.

Cowern would score a further two tries followed, and scrum half Matt Keightley touched down following a sniping solo dart from a five metre scrum to take the side into a 29-0 lead at the interval.

Team manager Dave Loveley had the luxury of bringing on the experiences fly half John Macpherson and back row Russell ‘Rusty’ Wright in the second half to torment the visitors, allied with rolling substitutions, so all bench players would get some game time.

It did not take long before the duo made their make, with Wright barging over from a quickly-taken tap penalty five metres out.

The score board proceeded to tick over with metronomic precision as, in order Cowern, Paling, Wright and Cowan added further tries.

Macpherson added four conversions.

The team have no scheduled game next week and resume action on October 12, away to North Hykeham Seconds.
