Boston Rugby Club kicked off their pre-season workouts with a last-gasp defeat to Peterborough.
The Midlands 1 side - who play two levels above the Blue and Whites - snatched their 22-17 victory at the death, scoring a try with the final move of the game.
However, Boston weren’t disheartened, and coach Willem Jonker expressed satisfaction with the performance.
Prop Alex Kemp scored two of Boston’s tries, with back row Steve Lovely crossing the whitewash for the other.
Fly half Tom Brooks kicked two conversions.
With both teams arriving with a large squad of players to try out, the afternoon proved to be a competitive encounter.
The two opponents played out four periods of 20 minutes apiece, allowing both coaches to try different players and combinations, also providing the players with valuable match time.
Boston have welcomed both Craig Dowse and Anthony Buckberry back to the Princess Royal Sports Arena, after both had spells at Spalding.
They, as well as a number of youngsters from the youth ranks, were involved in Saturday’s squad.
Following back-to-back promotions, the Blue and Whites are preparing for life in the Midlands 3 East (North) this season.
Tomorrow (Thursday), Boston entertain Spalding at the Boardsides (KO 7.30pm).
