IN THEIR first competitive game of the new season, basic mistakes would cost Boston dear in this the first round of the Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Lincolnshire cup.

Coach Jonker would be disappointed that from a position of strength in the second half, they conspired to snatch defeat from what should have been an opening victory.

Boston started positively in the first half taking the game to the visitors and deservedly took the lead from a well worked line out catch and drive, five metres out, with back row Marc Miles scoring, after 15 minutes.

East Retford, who play in a league above Boston, quickly levelled and with the conversion led 7-5.

With Retford having the advantage of the wind, Boston remained camped in their own half and from a lack of concentration in defence conceded a second converted try to extend their lead 14-5. A further conceded penalty just before half time, saw East Retford enter the break 17-7.

With the advantage of the wind and with astute tactical kicking from scrum half Jonker, it would take Boston only 10 minutes to claw back the 12 point deficit. From a quickly-taken tap penalty in Retford’s 22, quick hands saw winger Michael Baldwin squeeze over in the corner and with the conversion from Tom Brooks reduce the deficit to 12-17. It would be centre Tom Brooks who was the recipient of the opposition’s poor clearance, as a missed touch, was directed straight into the hands of the centre, which Brooks gratefully received and after converting his own try saw Boston take a two point 19-17 lead. With Boston now controlling the match, a well-taken drop kick from coach Jonker, extended their lead to 22-17, after 32 minutes.

Despite mounting a brave second half come back, continued errors would deny the home side the victory they craved for. Coach Jonker, however, can take a number of positives from the encounter and will be looking to this week’s training sessions to prepare the squad for their first league game of the season away at Keyworth.
