WILLEM Jonker raised a few eyebrows when he arrived at the Boardsides in the summer, declaring promotion was a minimum requirement.

But midway through his first season as coach of Boston Rugby Club, his promise looks like a good bet.

“I don’t want to blow my own trumpet, but as a coach I get the best out of people, especially promotion,” the South African claimed matter-of-factly in the summer.

“I expect nothing less than promotion this season.

His claims were bold, even for a man who led Peterborough to five promotions in seven years.

But as the Blue and Whites resume action following their winter break, they sit proudly on top of the Midlands 5 East (North).

But even better is their 100 per cent record, having won all seven of their league clashes to date this season.

They enjoy a comfortable six-point lead at the top of the table.

And to strike further fear into their opponents, Boston’s points tally of 387 is far superior to any opponent (Ollerton their closest rivals with 172).

They can also boast the meanest defence in the division, conceding just 46 points to date.

On Saturday, rugby returns to the Boardsides, Boston hosting Castle Donington at home.
