Boston Rugby Club will begin their 2013-14 season on Saturday - and coach Willem Jonker proudly boasts that ‘the lads are up for it’.
After bringing back-to-back promotions to the Boardsides in his two years at the club, Jonker has spent the past two months gearing his charges up for life in the Midlands 3 East (North) division.
But first comes Saturday’s Notts, Lincs and Derbyshire Plate match at Amber Valley, who play one level below the Blue and Whites.
Jonker is quick to point out that he sees the league campaign as the club’s bread and butter. But that doesn’t mean he will be taking the weekend clash lightly.
“Pre-season training has gone well and injuries are at a minimum,” Jonker told The Standard.
“Now the lads are up for it.
“Saturday is a cup game and will be more good preparation for the league season.
“But we’ll definitely take it seriously. Nobody goes into a match thinking about anything but winning.”
Craig Dowse and Anthony Buckberry have both re-joined the club after spells with Spalding.
But the core of Boston’s side will be the players who have had that winning mentality instilled in them following the past two years’ triumphs.
“The lads all have a lot of confidence. It helps that we still have a lot of the same squad which has done so well in the past two seasons,” the coach continued.
“The side bond really well, there’s a good social side to the club too. That means we have people who will fight for each other.”
However, Jonker is already loking to the future and is hoping to help graduate a few youngsters from the youth ranks this season, possibly blooding them in at Amber Valley.
He added: “There are four lads that I’m thinking will have a chance of breaking through.
“I still want to give them one or two matches in the development team to see how they step up to the physical challenge.
“But I think they could be good additions. Maybe we’ll have a look at them at Amber Valley?”
Boston will begin their league campaign at home to Sleaford on September 14.
