Scott: This Boston United team is best we've managed
Thursday, 5.10pm - ROB Scott has sung the praises of his Boston United squad – declaring they have the ability and the desire to succeed higher up the footballing ladder.
And the Pilgrims joint boss also reckons he has assembled a side stronger than the Ilkeston Town one he guided to promotion via the UniBond Premier play-offs last season.
"I think the squad we had at Ilkeston is better than the one they've got now – and they're 10th in the Blue Square North," Scott said.
"The squad we have here now is even better, so I don't have any worries about this side doing well next season if they do go up.
"We've got a better quality of players this season and if we go up we'll be able to compete, I've no doubt about that."
Scott, however, was quick to stress the word 'if' – not wanting to suggest he believes promotion is guaranteed.
But his Pilgrims went into last night's crunch clash at Retford on the back of five straight wins.
And if promotion was ensured this campaign, Scott believes he could keep the majority of his team together, suggesting his side should want to put the prestige of playing at York Street ahead of financial gains they could make elsewhere.
"We can't offer massive amounts of money, but we can offer a club of stature that they may not get elsewhere," he continued.
"I think the players should want to come and play at a place like this.
"When I was a player I wanted to play at the highest level I could and in the best stadiums in front of the most fans.
"If players just think about money then maybe they're not the ones for us."
United bolstered their squad last week with the signing of
ex-Lincoln City and Peterborough United winger Ryan Semple, who joined from Blue Square North strugglers Gainsborough Trinity.
Joint boss Paul Hurst, although pleased with Semple's debut in the 4-1 victory at Durham, had a pop at big-spending Trinity.
Backing Scott's argument, he added that desire will get you further in football than ex-Football League stars after a final pay-day.
"Gainsborough have shown that experienced players don't necessarily bring the goods, sometimes players just chase the money," he said.
"If a club's going to be successful then they've got to have players who want to be successful.
Hurst added that he and Scott have already compiled a list of players they think could do the job for United next campaign, whichever division they are in, although stating they would want to add just 'one or two' new faces to the squad.
