Tennis veterans’ title bid remains on course

BOSTON Tennis Club’s men continued their defence of the Lincolnshire Veteran League title is style.

They earned a 6-2 victory at fellow league hopefuls Grimsby.

Winning the Veteran League for the first time last year was an achievement for Boston, after their weekend opponents had dominated the division in previous years.

Holding on to the title will be an even tougher challenge for the 2011-2012 season.

But Sunday’s victory keeps them on course.

There were none of the epic proportions displayed in the men’s Australian Open final on the same day, but a significant match saw Ray Frankish, Chris Cook, James Newton and Richard Longworth overcome difficult, windy conditions.

The team has one remaining match, but this victory means they look well on course to win the league for the second year running.

The Boston Ladies’ second team, competing in Division Three of the Lincolnshire Veterans League, had a convincing win over Spalding seconds.

The team was Tricia Sweeney, Joan Beale, Rachel Gedney and Claire Collingwood-Smith.

The Boston A team succeeded in a tough contest against Eastgate in the Lincolnshire Mini Tennis Leagues on Saturday.

William Cheer, Thomas Hull, Millie Alexander, Callum McMillan, Matthew Gedney, Paris Royal, Daniel Dorey and Lucas East were the successful team members. There are a number of tournaments at Boston Tennis Club during the half term holiday.

On February 15 there is a Silver Spirit tournament for the over 60s.

Limited to 32 players, the entry list is already full, but eligible players can still be on standby by putting their names on the reserve list.

February 18 sees the Wilkinson Cup competed for.

Competitors should enter via the club noticeboard.
