More than 30 amateur and professional rowers are finalising their preparations to take on the challenges of the Witham for a good cause.

The Boston Dragon Boat festival is set to take place on Sunday from 10.30am when teams from across town will battle it out over the 200m course, watched by crowds of spectators.

Crews comprise eight-10 paddlers plus a drummer, although squads may be larger.

Crews can be mixed, all-female or all-male and organisations may enter more than one crew. The minimum age is 16 years and no previous experience of dragon boat racing is required.

The Boston Dragon Boat Festival is part of not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the belief in ensuring everyone has the healthiest heart they can.

It was founded in memory of John Stevens, who lived in the Boston area for most of his life, and was a keen supporter of local charities and all things Boston.

Last year, just under £8,000 was raised for charity and more than £20,000 has been raised over the three years the event has run.

The charities this year are the Pilgrim Heart and Lung Fund, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Macmillan Cancer Support, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance, The Samaritans and Pancreatic Cancer UK.
