VIDEO: ‘We’ve got plenty of room to grow’

With many allotments in the town full and building up waiting lists one village has space for those willing to go a little further to grow their own.

The Swanfield Lane Allotments, in Bicker, has more than 20 spaces spare and is looking for people who want their own plot of land.

Allotment holder Dave Webster said: “Other allotments seem to have waiting lists while we seem to have them going begging.”

He added: “It just seems strange that in this day and age there’s all that land going spare, when if people want one in their area they might be able to go a few miles up the road.

“It’s beautiful soil, it just seems a great shame that there’s a lot of allotments going spare.”

Although the land belongs to a village charity, the parish council is responsible for renting out allotments. Chairman coun Ian Carrott said the council would like to see the land used better.

He said: “It’s extremely fertile ground. Some of the best in the county.”

A full allotment is 15 yards wide by 40 yards long giving green-fingered residents a whole 600 square yards. This costs £13.50, per year. Half-sized allotments cost £10.

Allotments can be divided further but sizes and costs are on a negotiable basis.
