There will be plenty of festive cheer in Boston next week when the Christmas market and light-switch-on events are held.
There had been fears the event may not go ahead after Boston BID lost the ballot on its future and its £4,000 support for the event.
But eager to keep the Christmas spirit alive for shoppers and businesses, th e Boston Town Christmas Group was formed to carry it forward.
On Friday, November 29, the lights-switch on will take place with Emmerdale stars Chris Chittell, who plays Eric Pollard, and Lesley Dunlop, who plays Brenda Walker, flicking the switch.
The pair will take to the stage at about 6.30pm before making their way to Santa’s grotto in Pescod Square to wake up Santa for the year, and then onto Oldrids store where they will be signing autographs.
There will be a fairground in B&M Bargains car park, and the Christmas market will stretch from the Market Place to Wide Bargate.
l Christmas could come early for one Emmerdale fan this Saturday when Boston Auctions puts a slice of soap gold under the hammer.
A copy of the historic 40th anniversary script, signed by all the cast members, is to go to the highest bidder. A signed tea towel and poster will also go to auction.
Outgoing Boston BID chairman Alan Ellis sourced the script to raise money for the Mayor’s charities.
Bidders can attend the auction at Boston Auctions salerooms in Punchbowl Lane. Viewing is from 10am-noon with the charity auction at noon followed by a general sale. You can also bid online from anywhere in the world by registering at the portals found at www.easyliveauction.com/bostonauctions/
Boston Auctions is conducting the charity auction for free with all bids going to the Mayor’s charities.
The auctioneers, who will donate lots of their own to the cause, want to hear from any businesses prepared to offer lots for the charity sale. Contact them on 01205 365004.
The Emmerdale link continues on Friday, November 29, when actors Chris Chittell (Eric Pollard) and Lesley Dunlop (Brenda Walker) switch Boston’s Christmas lights on in the Market Place at 6.30pm.
It is hoped the lucky winner of the script will attend to receive their prize from the soap stars.
Alan, who has had a lifetime’s career in music, and his wife Moira, have used their celebrity contacts to build a festive relationship between Emmerdale and Boston. Last year actors Fiona Wade and Bhasker Patel, who play Priya and on-screen dad Rishi, toured the town and switched on Boston’s Christmas lights.
Alan said: “We are so grateful to have received this script. I feel it will really appeal to fans of the show. It will make a brilliant and original Christmas present for anyone who is a fan of the soap.”
An Emmerdale tea towel signed by the cast, last year’s Christmas in Boston poster featuring Fiona and Bhasker and this year’s featuring Chris and Lesley, each signed by both couples, will also be auctioned. Money raised will go to the Salvation Army and Boston branch of the Citizens Advice Bureau.
Boston BID is again planning a three-day Christmas extravaganza to include entertainment and festive markets. Christmas markets will be held in Boston Market Place on Friday, November 29, and Sunday, December 1, sandwiching the normal stall market on Saturday, November 30.
Friday and Sunday will be days of festive fun for all the family with entertainment including fairground rides, a military wives choir and Boston Motorcyle Riders’ Association
