The Standard’s film expert takes a look at some of the films being released in the next few weeks.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (Out December 13):
The first film was a decent, if slow, start which didn’t reach the heights of the Lord of the Rings trio, but there’s plenty to build on as hobbit Bilbo (Martin Freeman), wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellan) and thirteen dwarves continue in their epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor. Throw in the returning Legolas (Orlando Bloom) and this could still be something special.
Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (December 18):
Legendary San Diego newsman Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell) and his Channel 4 team of Brick Tamland (Steve Carell), Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd) and Champ Kind (David Koechner) move into the eighties for this comedy sequel. After the group disbands and hit rock bottom, they reunite to front a new 24-hour news channel in the Big Apple as the cable era begins. The 2004 original picked up such a cult following that the likes of Harrison Ford, Nicole Kidman, Jim Carrey and Vince Vaughn have joined this time round.
Amercian Hustle (December 20):
David O Russell re-teams with Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper in this crime-drama. When Christian Bale’s conman and partner (Amy Adams) are forced by an FBI agent (Cooper) to work for them – these are pushed into the underworld of the New Jersey Mafia where the stakes could mean life or death.
