The Standard’s resident film expert Gavin Miller previews the latest blockbuster movie releases coming out this week.

Taken 2 (12A): Just like Bruce Willis did in Die Hard 2, Liam Neeson will prove ‘lightning strikes twice’ as he cashes in on the surprise success of the original four years ago. This time it’s the wife (Famke Janssen) of Neeson’s CIA operative Bryan Mills getting the kidnapping treatment in this action thriller, with Maggie Grace again supporting.

The Perks Of Being A Wallflower (12A): Emma Watson looks to emulate Daniel Radcliffe – who had a massive hit with The Woman in Black earlier this year – by proving there’s life after Harry Potter. Based on the best-selling novel by Stephen Chbosky (who also directs), this drama captures the highs and lows of growing up.

Sparkle (12A): Whitney Houston proves she was one of the better music star-turned-actors of the past generation with an impressive final acting role in this musical drama before her untimely death. She stars as a single mother trying to keep her family together as her young prodigy daughter (Jordin Sparks) struggles for stardom in the Motown-era.
