A new £12,000 project by Transported Arts will take place in Boston town centre in the run-up to Christmas.
The town will hold an ‘illuminate’ event on November 26, as part of the upcoming Mayflower 400 celebration in 2020. The international event, led by Plymouth, will mark the 400-year anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower.
The illuminate event in Boston will involve a huge candlelit procession through the town.
Although not strictly a Christmas event, Transported Arts is working in partnership with Boston Borough Council to enable it to take place on the same day as the traditional switch-on – the fourth Thursday of November.
This is also Thanksgiving Day in America, giving an opportunity for the town to promote its heritage links to the US. The arts group is funding the £12,000 cost for the event and a series of creative workshops leading up to it.
Boston Town Area Committee (BTAC) agreed last week to pay £2,500 towards the Christmas switch-on events. The council is expected to put about £4,000 towards these costs. These will include the usual Christmas market, additional craft and food stalls and entertainment.
