The child of Henry Chaplin, owner of 23,000 acres of land, Edith, born at Blankney, spent most of her childhood in Scotland at the ancestral home of her maternal grandfather.
She went on to marry Viscount Castlereagh, who would later become the Marquess of Londonderry.

Hide AdIn 1914, she became Colonel in Chief of the Women’s Volunteer Reserve, recruiting women drivers and mechanics for the war effort.
Living at Mount Stewart, she created the gardens, regarded as one of the best in Britain, now in the hands of the National Trust.
The group’s next meeting is in WI House, Banks Street, on Wednesday, May 25, at 7.30pm, when Mick Rawle will give a talk on Enclosure and the Village Labourer. Admission is free.
The group will have a stand at the Woodhall Spa Country Show, when members will be on hand to give advice on family history.
