Online weight loss support group sessions, launched in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, are proving a hit in the Boston area.

At the end of March, Slimming World introduced a temporary virtual service to allow members to continue to receive support during the lockdown.

It utilises the online video conferencing tool Zoom to provide a virtual alternative to members’ weekly group meetings in the community.

The service has also meant that the organisation’s 5,000 consultants – all self-employed franchisees – have been able to stay in work.

One such consultant is Abi Carter, who runs groups in Kirton and Swineshead.

She says members are ‘absolutely loving’ the virtual sessions and added she has been welcoming new members every week.

“The feedback is great,” she said. “In such uncertain times, they love to gather together to share food ideas.

“Many have said it has not only helped them with staying on track food-wise, but also has helped with their mental wellbeing, knowing that they have some normality and some routine once a week where they can see their friends and family.”

The virtual sessions are optional, she added, saying that support is also available from herself, a closed Facebook group, and the member’s only section of Slimming World’s website.

Offering some tips from Slimming World for the lockdown, she said:

* Fall in love with food by trying something new.

* Stay in touch – missing family, friends, and even the normal routine can affect mood, and , as a result, eating and activity habits.

* Schedule in some ‘me’ time.

* Get active – good for the mind, as well as the body.

* Soothe your mind – limit exposure to sources of anxiety which may affect healthy choices; focus on the present moment, perhaps helped by colouring books and jigsaws; try to maintain the normal routine.
