Skoda has given the world its first impressions of its newest model – the Kamiq.

Positioned beneath the Kodiaq and Karoq, the Kamiq is being touted as a “city SUV” by the Czech brand, which is teasing the new model ahead of its unveiling at this year’s Geneva Motor Show.

When it hits showrooms later this year the Kamiq will be taking on the likes of the Nissan Juke, Renault Captur and Kia Stonic, as well as VW Group stablemates the Seat Arona and VW T-Cross. However, in its usual way, Skoda plans for the Kamiq to be slightly bigger than its direct rivals.

Skoda talk about “powerful rugged” looks for their urban SUV and the first sketches suggest the Kamiq will follow design cues set out by the Vision X concept.

The wide upright grille echoes that of the Karoq and Kodiaq but is highlighted by chrome trim, and LED running lights sit above the headlight units to give a more aggressive look.

The sharply defined “tornado line” cuts from the top of the front wings all the way back to an angular rear end dominated by the Skoda name spelled out in script across the tailgate.

Skoda haven’t said anything about the interior but based on the recently revealed Scala hatchback expect a clean, modern, unfussy look with standard touchscreen and connected technology.

Engine information is likewise thin on the ground but similar sized VW Group cars use a mixture of 1.0-litre and 1.5-litre petrols and a 1.6-litre diesel, so it’s likely the Kamiq will follow suit, along with a choice of six-speed manual and seven-speed DSG transmissions.
