NOSTALGIA: Boston gets set for Butch and Sundance, but counts cost of whirlwind in 1970

To the left, we find the new manager of the Classic Cinema, Mr J. Marshall Robertson, introducing himself to the town in a spectacular fashion.

The stunt was designed to plug the upcoming screening of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford.

A former member of the Queen’s Household Cavalry, he was used to riding a horse through London’s busy traffic.

To the right, we see Albert Marshall, of Fishtoft, surveying damage caused to his bungalow by a whirlwind.

The weather event struck a number of homes in the Boston area, causing extensive damage, flattening sheds and lifting a postman’s car off the ground.

Fortunately, no one was injured.

Of the incident, Mr Marshall said: “There was a terrific swooshing noise and it seemed as if the bungalow was 
exploding.”
