ALLOTMENT holders could be ‘encouraged’ by Borough councillors raising the rent to form self-management associations.
It has been decided to set up a task and finish group to look at the recommendations which aim to make allotments cost neutral after they were discussed at a scrutiny committee meeting on Wednesday.
It will involve raising the rent at the council run allotments from £23 for 300 sq yards and £46 for 600 sq yards in 2012-13 to £130 and £260 respectively in 2016-17.
The rent will be increased gradually and it is hoped that it will encourage community ownership and independent associations who will then be able to set their own rents and manage their own affairs.
Concerns were raised by councillors about the size of the rises, the size of allotments and whether the scheme would work.
