In a secret location, the wooden frame of the large-scale model of the renowned Mayflower ship is being finished off ready for the paper hull to be layered on.
Volunteers will then ‘sail’ it into Boston Market Place for the festive lights turn on at 6.30pm tomorrow (Thursday).
The Mayflower wrote a huge chapter in the book of world history when it carried the Pilgrims from England to America almost 400 years ago.
The Illuminate event, organised by Transported (the Boston arts organisation) will feature The Mayflower upon a multi-coloured ocean inhabited by multi-coloured fish as part of a lantern-lit procession through the town’s streets.
It launches a series of celebrations leading up to the 400th anniversary of the landing of the Mayflower in 2020.
Two processions will set off from 5.30pm. The Christmas Market starts trading at noon and there will be stage entertainment from 5-8pm, including a 15-minute performance of the Mayflower story by the Rhubarb Theatre. Look out for stunning displays in the town’s shops as businesses compete for the title of this year’s best decorated Christmas window contest.
All car parks controlled by Boston Borough Council will have free parking from 4pm onwards on the day.
