More apprentices

HUNDREDS of young people in Boston have been given a helping hand onto the career ladder over the past year, according to new statistics.

Figures from National Statistics showed that 850 apprenticeships were delivered in Boston and Skegness in the 2010/11 - an increase of 67 per cent.

Boston and Skegness MP Mark Simmonds said: “The record rise in apprenticeship numbers shows the Government’s commitment to helping employers train the skilled workers they need.”

Heidi Thompson, senior operations manager at Kier, which recently took on apprentices, said: “Taking on new recruits through apprenticeships offers several advantages - the process allows us to develop our staff to become mentors and provides learners with valuable life skills.”
