Sixteen senior prefects and sixth form ambassadors from Haven High Academy have just returned from an ‘experience of a lifetime’ to Washington DC and New York.

The 12-day tour was the culmination of a year-long leadership pathways programme which saw the team representing the Academy, town and county in various events and charity fundraising projects. As well as visiting all the sights of two of America’s most famous cities, including a guided tour of Georgetown University, students also enjoyed an orchestral concert at The Kennedy Centre for the Arts, an NBA basketball game between the New York Knicks and Chicago Bulls in the world famous Madison Square Garden and a performance of Matilda on Broadway. Each day was carefully planned and lead by a pair of students, including bookings, transport and meals.

Executive head Adrian Reed said: “This was a real challenge for our young people and a true test of their leadership skills.”

An Academy spokesman added: “We would like to thank all of our sponsors whose generous contributions ensured that the full year programme and trip could go ahead at no cost to Haven High Academy students. The race is already on for current year 10 students hoping to be selected for the programme next year.”
