Amit Sharma, 38, of Middlecott Close, Boston admitted the theft when he appeared at Boston Magistrates Court.

The court heard that he was detained by staff in the afternoon of September 20 after stealing £213 worth of baby clothing from the town's Marks and Spencer store.

Mitigating, Michael Alexander said Sharma had had ten theft offences in the past 18 months but this one had happened because he had failed to collect a methadone prescription from the pharmacist and so his regular prescription was stopped and not restarted for two to three weeks.

The magistrates heard that he had responded well to a previous drug referral order so imposed a new one for six months as well as five rehabilitation days.

He was also ordered to pay £170 in costs and charges.
