‘Appalling’ vandals ripped the roof from a wooden shelter at Witham Way Country Park and burned it overnight on Monday

The incident, near the trim trail and picnic area, follows another incident of damage to a bench, part of which was also burned, and litter from a drinking session left scattered just yards away from a bin.

A council spokesman said visitors to the park on Tuesday were ‘disgusted at the damage’

They said the visitors also reported seeing two men sleeping in a tent overnight in an area off the beaten track.

Cllr Yvonne Gunter, Boston Borough Council’s portfolio holder for parks and open spaces, said: “I am appalled at the way some people treat areas such as this. Such a lot of effort, from council staff and dedicated volunteers, goes into keeping the park nice for all, but some show such disrespect. It is all the more upsetting when you consider this small shelter bears a plaque dedicating it to the memory of people who loved the park.

“It is difficult to police these areas which, by their very nature, are isolated, especially at night. I would appeal again for anyone seeing anything looking the least bit suspicious to please contact the police immediately.”

Police are investigating the latest attack and have given the incident number 36/13/8/13.

Information to police non-emergency number 101.
