Boston man appears at crown court charged with murder

A MAN has appeared at Lincoln Crown Court this morning charged with the murder of a 72-year-old man who was allegedly assaulted in Boston bus station.

Joao Costa of Porcher Way in Boston was treated for head injuries after the incident in St Georges Road during the early hours of Friday morning. He later died in Pilgrim Hospital.

Russell Dean Read, 38, of Castle Street in Boston, was later charged with Mr Costa’s murder.

Wearing a blue jumper and jeans Read spoke only to confirm his name during the five minute preliminary hearing. There was no application for bail.

Phil Howes, prosecuting, told the court: “This is a murder case sent by magistrates on May 14.”

No plea was entered and Read was remanded into custody until August 31 when he will next appear at Lincoln Crown Court for a plea and case management hearing.

Judge Michael Heath told Read: “On that occasion you will be asked to enter a plea to the allegation you face.”

The case was listed for a provisional trial date in November.
