A motorist who overtook four vehicles on a blind bend when he was late for work has been branded an ‘idiot’ by the judge who banned him from driving for two years.
Shane Pogson, 35, reached speeds of 80mph as he was followed by a police officer in an unmarked car in July last year.
Lincoln Crown Court was told on Wednesday the officer was travelling on the A52 near Wrangle when she noticed Pogson approaching behind ‘very quickly’.
She saw his BMW overtake three vehicles and then swerve ‘all over the road’.
Pogson, who did not realise he was being followed by a police car, was seen overtaking four vehicles on a blind bend near Benington,
After he was stopped he told police he was late for work in Boston.
In mitigation, the court was told the father-of-four helped to care for his 73-year-old father.
Pogson, of Oak Court, Wrangle, pleaded guilty to a single charge of dangerous driving on July 5.
He was sentenced to nine months imprisonment, suspended for one year, and ordered to carry out 180 hours of unpaid community work. He has to undertake an extended driving test and pay £150 court costs.
Sentencing, judge Keith Raynor said: “It was a disgraceful piece of driving. It is idiots like you who sometimes cause deaths on the roads. This county is blighted by bad driving.
