Steve Greenhough’s experience on the local pop scene has been vital to getting the Boston Gliderdrome’s first Christmas dance on for years.

Steve used Facebook and his page – I Went to the Gliderdrome – to advertise the upcoming reopening and many tickets for the December 20 event have already been sold.

He was compère for Boston’s Party in the Park gigs and puts on events across the area.

The first time he went to the Glider was to see Otis Redding, in September 1966.

He said: “I can’t describe the experience. It was amazing and I was hooked. After seeing such names as Otis, Stevie Wonder and Ike and Tina Turner can you imagine how I felt when Sydney Malkinson’s daughter Steph asked if Midnight Blue would like to support Lindisfarne on the same stage where week after week I had stood watching these giants of the music industry? We were ecstatic.”

He first started talking to Andrew Malkinson about re-opening the Starlight Room and putting a dance on earlier this year and eventually he persuaded him it could happen.

On the night Steve will be compère and DJ and now aims to fill the dancefloor and reignite the memories of the Gliderdrome’s glory days.

Tickets are £10 available from the Gliderdrome (on bingo nights), Chris Cook Print and Burgess, Thompson and Richardson.
