Teenager will give up gadgets to teach in Africa

A BOSTON teenager is giving up technological comforts of his mobile phone and the internet to help teach children in Ghana.

Jack Courtney, of Jubilee Avenue, is looking to raise about £3,500 to pay for his five-month trip where he will volunteer at a school in Takoradi on the Ghanaian coast. The trip is being organised through charity Lattitude Global Volunteering

“I will be leaving my mobile phone behind as calls cost about £3 a minute from there, and the nearest internet café is a 20 mile round trip on foot from where I will be staying,” said Jack, 18.

“I will teach sports and drama to local schoolchildren, many of whom can already speak some English and French.”

The former Kirton Middlecott pupil will fly out in early and lodge with a Ghanaian family.
