Huge rise in sex shop sales thanks to the Fifty Shades of Grey effect

Hype surrounding the Fifty Shades of Grey film has boosted sex shop’s sales by 40 per cent.

Boston’s ‘sexy superstore’ Pulse and Cocktails says its sales rocketed over the Valentine’s Day weekend - with customers snapping up sex toys and bondage gear.

Trade was up 40 per cent this year compared to the same period last year, which owners say is down to the ‘Fifty Shades’ effect.

A spokesman for the company said: “The film is continuing to have a huge impact this week even after Valentine’s day, as plenty of people are going to watch it and coming to visit the store after to get hold of handcuffs, silk ties, floggers and eye masks.”

The store will continue to offer 20 per cent discount to any customer who brings in their Fifty Shades cinema ticket.

Last week The Standard reported how the shop, in Emery Lane, had sold out of handcuffs due to a high demand sparked by interest in the film, which has received mixed reviews since its release.
