A firefighter from Boston who was hospitalised after an accident just hours into his stag do in Magaluf has been forced to postpone his wedding.
James Thorpe, 28, and partner Michaela Watson, 32, were due to get married in Belvoir Castle, Grantham, on Friday, but Miss Watson has now confirmed they have had to cancel those plans.
It needs to be perfect and it wouldn’t have been... I knew deep down that the day would not go ahead, but I didn’t want to take that drive away from James.Michaela Watson, James’ partner
Speaking to BBC Norfolk she said: “It needs to be perfect and it wouldn’t have been... I knew deep down that the day would not go ahead, but I didn’t want to take that drive away from James.”
“It would be amazing if James could walk down the aisle... that’s what we’re praying for and that’s what we’re aiming for..”
James had gone for a swim with his friends after arriving in the resort but is now recovering after he fell in the sea, damaging his neck and leaving him hospitalised.
He had to have an operation while in Magaluf to replace his seventh vertebrae and has been left unclear whether he will be left paralysed from his injuries though he is reporting to have feeling in his legs and toes.
Last week, he was flown back to the UK and attended Sheffield Hospital’s spinal injuries unit upon his return with help from a fundraising page set up by friend and fellow firefighter Simon Burch.
A crowd-funding website set up to help the James and his family has raised nearly £12,500.
James’ friends also managed to get the Wealdstone Raider to give James a Get Well Soon message while they were in Magaluf.
