BOSTON and Skegness MP Mark Simmonds has voted against a motion to support a referendum on Britain’s membership in the European Union.

Mr Simmonds said: “I am in favour of allowing the people to decide, via a referendum, on the future of the UK’s relationship with the EU. However, I believe the timing of this proposed referendum is quite wrong, particularly with the crisis that is currently engulfing the Eurozone. The Government must focus and put all its energy into rescuing the economic crisis, by stimulating growth and creating jobs. We must bring back powers and resist the further transfer of powers to the EU by using the referendum block. The proposals emanating from the weekend EU summit may allow such a renegotiation to start as early as December.”
