Town Youth Club offto a successful start

The club - based at the Youth Centre off Jubilee Way - threw open its doors last month after being closed for four years.

There was a bumper turn-out at the opening night and it is hoped that trend will continue over the coming weeks and months.

And, it has emerged, the club could get a ‘helping hand’ from a recently disbanded youth club in Woodhall Spa.

The Spa club closed because of a lack of volunteers to help run sessions.

After reading reports about the new Horncastle venture, the Spa club has offered to donate equipment, including two table tennis tables and a pool table.

Tim Peacock, one of the officials from the former Spa club, said: “It would be nice to be able to help, although nothing has been agreed yet.”

The Horncastle club - which is open every Monday evening - has been backed by a number of town organisations, including the Lions.

Lincolnshire County Council are also supporting the venture.

John Herbert, the county council’s Youth Hub Practice Supervisor, said: “We’re delighted to see the youth club up and running again.

“The centre provides local children, young people and organisations with a base for activities and events, so it’s great that the youth club has been relaunched. Viv Cross, the senior youth and community development worker in East Lindsey, has worked in Horncastle for a number of years and has set up the initial meetings for the volunteers and community members, who will gradually take over the running of the centre.

“We’ll continue to support with any safeguarding or essential training needs and look forward to seeing the centre thrive under its committed group of volunteers.”

Horncastle Police are supporting the club. PCSO Nigel Wass said: “The opening night was a great success and everyone is looking forward to building on that.”

He also thanked the Spa club for the offer of help.
