MATT Cardle says he ‘can’t wait’ to perform at Boston Town football ground next month – despite not being a fan of the sport.
“I prefer skateboarding and things like that, to be honest,” he told The Standard when we interviewed him on Saturday.
“I’m not a huge fan of football, but I have played at Twickenham as part of the X Factor and that was an amazing atmosphere, so I’m really looking forward to the Boston gig.”
Matt, who has just finished his UK tour, is set to headline a concert at Boston Town Football Club’s ground on May 26.
He will perform an acoustic set and some vocal performances set to tracks, before a fireworks display closes the concert.
Speaking about his career since winning the 2010 X Factor, the 28-year-old said: “My life has changed so much and the support has been incredible, both during and after the show.
“I’ve been a singer/songwriter since the age of 10 so to be able to do this now – and for them to let me write my own album and it go platinum – I feel incredibly lucky.”
The concert is expected to draw people into Boston from all over the country – including some of Matt’s more die-hard fans, who follow him on tour.
“There’s a group of girls that come along with us to many of our tour dates,” said Matt, who revealed he often gets ‘knickers and bras’ thrown to him on stage.
But one fan’s gesture particularly sticks in his memory: “There was one girl who had ‘Matt Cardle Tour 2012’ and my signature tattooed down her arm. I reckon I must have signed her arm at some point and she then had it tattooed over.”
And it seems Matt’s fan base is branching out after his appearance on the front cover of March’s Gay Times magazine. Matt said he’s not aware of having a particular gay following, but added: “It was an opportunity that came up to do a front cover shoot, and I just thought ‘why not?’.”
Matt’s debut album Letters was released in October last year and includes his number one song When We Collide, along with Run For Your Life, written by Gary Barlow.
So having already worked with Take That’s front man, and performed with Rihanna on X Factor, who would Matt love to work with next?
“Chris Martin,” he said, without hesitation. “I’m a huge fan of Coldplay and I think he’s a genius.”
