Letter: Athletics club is shining example of ‘localism’

I WOULD like to thank the Boston and District Athletic Club for inviting me to present the awards at their annual prize giving and also the kind gift of flowers to my wife Pam.

I must commend the sterling efforts that have been made by Beryl, Peter and Nanette and their exemplary committee for all the hard work and enthusiasm they have put in over the last 12 months in the B-hive, their training facility, and their support to all of the athletes who are members of their club.

When you read the new local government bill about localism and the ‘big society’ – the athletics club is a shining example of how localism can work and you can only take your hats off to all the hard voluntary work which is being put into athletics in Boston.

As a former member of Birchfield Athletics Club in Birmingham, where they received immense support from their local authority in both financial terms and in civic pride; and as somebody who has been involved in a lifetime of voluntary work, I am enthused by this dynamic bunch of people.

Can I wish all of the people involved in Boston and District Athletic Club a very merry Christmas and a happy and successful New Year.
